SWANTON – Missisquoi dominated the midfield to keep the pressure on visiting Milton Tuesday afternoon, and goalie Cassidy Dunphy had to make just three saves for the Thunderbirds’ second straight shutout to start the season.
Rhianna Sweeney scored twice for MVU, which followed last week’s scoreless tie against Harwood with a 4-0 victory over the Yellowjackets on Tuesday at home. Annie Ploof and Danielle Cummings added a goal and an assist each.
Cummings got the only goal the Thunderbirds would need when she scored 15 minutes in, then set up Sweeney for a 2-0 lead with 5:46 left in the first half. Ploof converted an assist from Lauren Broderick with 19:42 remaining in the match, and Sweeney scored from Ploof to close out the win, with 14:36 left.
Aly Sheehan made 13 saves in goal for Milton.
Both teams will be back in action Thursday with home games. The Thunderbirds (1-0-1) take on North Country while the Yellowjackets (0-2) take on Lyndon Institute.
Missisquoi and Milton will meet again on the final afternoon of the regular season, Oct. 19, in Milton.
