BAKERSFIELD — Zilda Marie Harvey Maynard, age 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 at the St. Albans Health Care and Rehab facility. She was a kind, caring, and loving woman that always made everyone feel loved. She had a big smile and a bigger heart.

Born Feb. 6, 1943 in Jeffersonville, she was a twin daughter born to the late Stanley and Hazel (Mashia) Harvey. In 7th grade, Zilda and Zona alternated between going to school and caring for their dying mother at home. It was a close-knit family of five sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1961 and began working at Town and Country Insurance.

Zilda married Frank “Bill” Maynard on May 25, 1963 and moved to Bakersfield. Her pride and joy was her son, Burt, and daughter, Brenda. She was the best mother and aunt; her home always had fresh baked cookies, homemade desserts, games to play and her singing “love makes the world go ’round”. She was always there for her family, friends and neighbors. Zilda was very active in the Bakersfield Congregational Church; she volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and always donated her knitted mittens to the Christmas Bazaar. She was a former auditor for the Town of Bakersfield.  Zilda was a hot lunch cook at the Bakersfield Common School, and served up a big smile along with her delicious cooking.

Zilda loved children and patiently waited to become a grandmother; she was blessed with eight grandchildren. Unfortunately, dementia stole Zilda from her children and grandchildren. It wasn’t fair, but we were blessed for all the years she gave everything she could to be the best mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend. She never complained and always put her family first.

She is survived by her children, Burt and Kimberly Maynard of Franklin and Brenda and Larry Westcom of Bakersfield; eight grandchildren, Levi, Elena, Naomi and Adira Maynard, Dillan, Zachery, Sawyer and Lindsay Westcom; a sister, Marlene Dezotelle of Waterville and twin sister, Zona and Olin Bryce of Cambridge; Siblings-in-law, Clayton Russell of Hyde Park, George Desmarais of Johnson, Suzanne Harvey-Safford of Westford, Martha and John Hyne of Bakersfield, Norma Benjamin of Franklin, George Partridge of Bakersfield and Dick and Shirley Maynard of Bakersfield and former husband, Frank “Bill” Maynard of Florida. Besides her parents, Zilda was predeceased by her sisters, Beverly Russell and Katherine Desmarais; brothers, Stanley Harvey Jr. and George Harvey and siblings-in-law, Lloyd Dezotelle, Richard and Eleanor Maynard, Marty Gleason and Marilyn Partridge.

Funeral services will be held for Zilda on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Bakersfield and Fairfield, East Bakersfield Road, Bakersfield. Interment will follow in the Jeffersonville Village Cemetery.
