The Museum has a large collection of sports-related photographs. The collection covers many different sports including baseball, basketball and football. Among the photographs are a couple of unusual sports like rugby, but this is our only photograph of the polo team.

We do not have a lot of information about the team, but from the labeling on the back we know they played at Hunt’s Roller Rink which was once located on Kingman Street. This team played for at least three years; 1886, 1887 and 1888. The Kingman Street area was leveled once in the 1870s and again in the 1890s so nothing remains today of Hunt’s Roller Rink. We would certainly love to find a photograph of the building!

Fortunately, we have the names of the boys on the team.

Front Row L – R: E D Walker, Hal Soule, Charlie Clark, and George Ford.

Back Row: L – R: Robert Ford, Arthur Fletcher, and Jed Knuckey.

Attached to the photo is a ribbon this team won at some point, but unfortunately it is not dated. Note the sticks and roller skates. What a wonderful photograph!!

Do you have another great photograph like this one that should be preserved? If you do we would like to hear from you. Please call the Museum at 527-7933, or contact us at stamuseum.org.
