MARCOLA, Ore. — Russell Alan Sears, 71, lost his battle with cancer Nov. 28, 2015 at home in Marcola, Ore.

Russ was born Nov. 9, 1944 in St., Albans, son of the late Alden and Cecile ‘Pat’ Washburn Sears. He grew up at Sheldon Springs and St. Albans Bay on Lake Champlain. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald and Richard.

Russ attended elementary school in Sheldon Springs and high school at Bellows Free Academy. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, took basic training at Great Lakes, submarine school training at New London, Conn., then stationed about the “USS Raton” in San Diego, where he met his wife, Geri. After his naval service, he attended college at Mesa College, San Diego and graduated from San Diego State University with a BSc in Information Systems.

In 1973, he moved with his family to Geri’s hometown, Newport, Ore. and found a home in Toledo, Ohio, where he worked for the US Postal Service in Toledo for two years and then was employed by the Lincoln County Assessors Office for 28 years, retiring in 2005.

Russ was a member of the Elks Lodge, Toledo. He loved elk and deer hunting, crabbing, clamming, camping with family and friends and traveling. After his retirement, they traveled extensively in Canada, Mexico and the United States. They spent part of two winters working as volunteers for the National Park Service at Joshua Tree National Park, Calif. The last several summers were spent at St. Albans Bay, Lake Champlain building a summer home on the property that was his childhood camp.

Russ is survived by his wife, Geri Sears; children: Laurene (Richard) Moore of Lebanon, Michele Zoff of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Kevin Martin (BeckySue Graves) of Siletz, Lisa (Tom) Krewson of Crooked River Ranch and Christy-Ann (Steve) Pilson of Bend; ten grandchildren and spouses; thirteen great grandchildren; three aunts; three nephews; a niece and many cousins.

A memorial service was held at the Toledo Elks Lodge on Jan. 30, 2016.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Sears camp on St. Albans Bay on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. to be followed by a barbecue (hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken to be provided). Bring your own sides.
