HIGHGATE — Rosaire Joseph Gagne, age 88 years, died late Monday evening, Dec. 30, 2013, in the Northwestern Medical Center with loving family at his side.

Born in Sanford, Maine on Feb. 11, 1925, he was the son of the late Emile and Alma (Rivard) Gagne. He attended schools in Highgate and on Sept. 15, 1945, was married to the former Rachel Margaret Bilodeau who predeceased him on March 12, 2001.

Rosaire along with his family owned and operated a dairy farm on the St. Armand Road in Highgate Center for many years. He was also a master carpenter and at the same time that he was farming built many beautiful homes throughout the area. In earlier years he had also worked at the former East Highgate Axe Factory as well as for the railroad. He was very involved in producing maple syrup and had a 35-year association with the Vermont Maple Festival.

Rosaire was a longtime faithful parishioner of Saint Louis Roman Catholic Church, a member of the Highgate Historical Association and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

He leaves his eight children, Paul and Linda Gagne, Richard Gagne, Ernest and Arlene Gagne and David and Tina Gagne all of Highgate, Gerald and Bonnie Gagne of Highgate Springs, Rene Gagne and Ann Domina of Swanton, Arlene Durkee of Charlotte, N.C., and Pauline Klassen of Pocatello, Idaho. 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and his Companion, Cecile Cassavant of East Highgate. Also surviving are two sisters and their husbands, Rita and Rudy Chapola of Champlain, N.Y., and Loretta and Fred Quilliam of St. Albans; a brother, Donat Gagne of Swanton and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife, Rachel, Rosaire was predeceased by a grandson, Steven Gagne; a son-in-law, John Durkee; a daughter-in-law, Pam Gagne; brothers, Lionel and Ovila Gagne and sisters, Lorraine Nichols and Lucille Campagna.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, 186 Lamkin St., Highgate Center. Rosaire’s cousin, Father Leonidas B. Laroche will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Gagne family lot in Saint Louis Cemetery.

Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
