Colburn, who has been the Marine Band’s director for 10 years, retired this past weekend after 27 years of playing and conducting at presidential inaugurations, White House functions, and at shows around the country. At different points in his career, Colburn served as the band’s principal euphonium, assistant director, and director. In addition to passing on the baton, Colburn received a Distinguished Service Medal during last weekend’s ceremony.

Colburn is a St. Albans native and Bellows Free Academy graduate, where his father, Vern, served as the long-time and well-respected music director. Colburn will be taking over as the next director of bands at Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind..
