SARASOTA, Fla. — Mary Jo Gearty, of Enosburgh, died peacefully on April 27 in Sarasota, Fla., in the presence of her immediate family.

Born in Michigan on March 5, 1932, Mary Jo attended Catholic schools and was an avid participant in youth activities. She especially enjoyed trips to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Eventually, her family relocated to New Jersey where she met and married her husband of 61 years, Bob Gearty.

Mary Jo considered motherhood as her greatest achievement in life, having raised three children, teaching Christian and family values which kept her family intact, despite a wide geographic separation. As her children made their own careers, Mary Jo moved on to administrative and secretarial activity in a law firm; a school system and real estate. When her husband retired, they made many cross-country road trips while enjoying a new retirement home in Northern Vermont, which became a fun-filled bed and breakfast called “Tipperary”.

Mary Jo leaves behind her husband, Robert P. Gearty, of Enosburgh; three children: Robert P. Jr. and wife, Susan, of Oakhurst, N.J.; Michael J. and wife, Deborah, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; daughter Patricia Ross and husband, John, of Nashville, Tenn., and four grandchildren: Alicia, Sean, Brian and Kelly.

She was predeceased by her parents, John T. and Helen Belanger and is also survived by two sisters: Julie Lackey and husband, Bruce, of Durham, N.C.; and Madeline Newman and Charles Raible of Clifton, N.J.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.
