ST. ALBANS- Mary B. Houghton, age 94, passed away on July 27, 2018 following a brief illness.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., she was the daughter of Hasten and Alberta Baumgardner. She grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and following high school; she went to work at Birmingham Savings and Loan. There she met Bob Houghton, and they married in 1943 in San Bernadino, Calif. Following WWII, she and Bob settled in his hometown of St. Albans, Vt. where they raised their family. In 1975, they moved to Charlottesville, Va. where she worked for the University of Virginia. After retirement, she and Bob moved to Greensboro, N.C. where she resided for nearly thirty years. Mary enjoyed playing bridge and canasta, and through that, she made many good friends. She was a two-time survivor of breast cancer. She had a good sense of humor and liked to stay busy, and that contributed to a long life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bob; an infant son, Ralph; and her sister, Betty Walker. She is survived by her children, Dottie and John Kosicki of Cornelius, N.C., Cathee and Gardner Smith of Reading, Vt., and Robert and Lynn Houghton of Greensboro, N.C.; her grandchildren, Michael and Sara Kosicki, Rob and Kristen Kosicki, Jody and Chad Hickey, Matt and Sherri Smith, Woody and Jenn Smith, Carla Mabie, and Elissa Houghton, who cared for her during her last months. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank her friends and neighbors for their support, along with the kind and compassionate people with Hospice who eased her through her illness. Hanes Lineberry is assisting the family, and a service will be scheduled at St. Francis Episcopal Church where she was a member. A graveside service will be held later in St. Albans, Vt. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 would be appreciated.
