ST. ALBANS — Margaret Elizabeth Miller, 75, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2015 at the NMC in St. Albans. Despite several years of ill health, pain and suffering, Maggie was a feisty, independent woman who overcame many obstacles and challenges with her health, surprising doctors and family alike with her resilience and strong will to survive. She had an unconditional love for her family and it is our belief that she fought hard through so many extensive hospital visits for our sake rather than her own.
Margaret was born in Burlington, Vt., on Jan. 3, 1940 to Philip and Margaret Plankey. She was the second of seven children. Margaret married the love of her life, Ervin Bessette, on Oct. 1, 1955. They remained lifelong friends even after their marriage ended. Margaret was an LPN at the old St. Albans Hospital for many years. She enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, and crocheting, but most especially spending time with her family.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and her son Philip. She leaves behind six children: Carol LaRochelle, Ervin Bessette Jr., Eugene Bessette, Ernest Bessette, Richard Bessette and his wife, Brenda, and Leo Martin and his partner, Brenda Ploof. Margaret had many grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Although she loved all of her grandchildren equally, she always believed her son Philip watched over her through his son Michael Bessette. Margaret looked forward to Michael’s daily visits because he did everything he could to make her final year as comfortable and as happy as possible.
Although there will be no funeral or public viewing, Margaret’s ashes will be buried with her parents in early summer, as she wanted. A memorial will be held at a later date when all of the family is able to be there together.
