ESSEX — M. Richard “Dick” Toof, 70, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 unexpectedly at his home in Essex Junction. Dick was born in Providence, R.I., on July 1, 1943 son of the late Milo and Marion (Glidden) Toof.

Dick grew up in Franklin with family and many friends who were like family to him.  As a young man he spent much time working on his Uncle Richard’s farm.  He was known for his athletic talent, strength, and trumpet playing.  He spent many years as a devoted volunteer fireman with the Franklin Fire Department.  Dick loved his camp on Lake Carmi, his boat, and traveling.  In 1978 he began his career at IBM.  His greatest passion besides his wife Carolyn, family, and friends was music, a love he shared with his parents.  He became a gifted musician as soon as he was old enough to hold a trumpet.  He never stopped playing, and in his retirement, it became his full-time job. Through the years, he played with several town bands, The Vermonters and many other musical groups.  Most recently, he was a part of the Onion River Jazz Band, Swingin’ Vermont Big Band, St. Albans Citizens Concert Band and Enosburg Town Band sometimes playing four times a week.  Although Dick spent many years battling health challenges, he never lost his wonderful sense of humor, determination and kind heart.  He was a deacon at the Essex Congregational Church where he and his wife practiced their faith and grew together in love throughout their long marriage.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn (Serianni) Toof of Essex Jct.; two sons:  Mark Richard Toof and wife, Melissa, of Swanton; Richard Serianni and wife, Pauline, of Denver, Colo.; four daughters:  Deborah (Toof) Boucher and husband, Denis, of Highgate Center; Dawne Serianni Myers and husband Eric of Middlebury; Pamela Toof of Essex Jct.; Laurie Serianni of Milton; three grandchildren:  Matthew Myers, Cassandra Boucher and partner Dustin Circe, and Megan Myers; his children’s mother, Ann Clark; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother Howard in 1967 and his granddaughter Renée Boucher on June 30, 2013.
