ST. ALBANS —  Lester “Les” Schmidlen, 75, died Sunday, April 12, 2015 in UVM Medical Center, Burlington.

Born May 13, 1939 in Kane, Pa. He was a son of the late Otto Oscar and Mamie (Hertig) Schmidlen.

Les graduated from Sheffield High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  He served with the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the St. Albans Radar Base. Later he was employed at IBM as a computer programmer for 27 years, taking early retirement in 1992, at which time he co-founded Rals Computer Service. Les enjoyed nature, especially sailing Lake Champlain and feeding the wildlife.

Les leaves his wife of 52 years, Roberta Lee (Heald) Schmidlen of St. Albans, three children, Robert Schmidlen and wife, Julie, of Los Gatos, Calif.; Laurie Lee Scott and husband, John, of Huntington; and Joseph Schmidlen and wife, Katie, of St. Albans.  He also leaves five grandchildren, Emalee, Andrew, Alana, Audrey and Zane. Other family members include two sisters, Helen Adams and husband, William, and Vivian McKee all of Lancaster, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Les is predeceased by two brothers, Otto and Donald Schmidlen.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 8, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans with Rev. Mr. Duane Langlois, Deacon at Holy Angles Parish in St. Albans, officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to the time of the service.
