ST. ALBANS – Judy Carter Shanafelt of Holland, Mich., passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Holland Hospital, with her family at her side.

Born in Montreal, Canada on Sept. 3, 1937, Judy was the daughter of the late James and Doris (Fonda) Carter of St. Albans. She was 75 years old.
On Dec. 27, 1959, in Jefferson City, Mo., she married Gene Keith Shanafelt, who survives her.

Judy and her family lived in Swanton and St. Albans, where she graduated from the Church Street School in 1951. After moving to Portsmouth, N.H., Judy graduated high school from the R. W. Traip Academy in Kittery, Maine in 1955. Judy was a graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., earning a B.S. in Education in January, 1960.
Judy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and playing in the bell choir. Judy was active in Camp Fire and 4-H and was a board member for the Holland Council of Camp Fire in Holland, Mich. She was employed at Freedom Village in Holland, a senior living and retirement facility, until she retired in December 2001.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 53 years, Keith; daughters, Karen Lareau of Holland, and Lisa Gower and her husband, William of Black Hawk, Colo.; grandchildren, Shaun Carter of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jason Lareau of Holland, Philip Bosma of Austin, Texas, Colin Bosma of Boston, Mass., and Kyria Bosma of Boulder, Colo. Judy is also survived by her brothers, Alan Carter of Texas and J. Ross Carter and his wife, Kay of Florida, and their children.

A memorial service will take place in celebration of her life in the summer of 2014 in St. Albans. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children at donate2shc.org.
