ST. ALBANS – Josephine ‘Jo’ Perry Smith a lifelong resident of this area passed away early Friday, July 22, 2016, at the St. Albans Healthcare & Rehab Center with her son, Perry and his wife, Annette, with her.

Born in St. Albans, on June 10, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Lucius D. and Eliza (Sweeny) Perry, Jo was 82 years old.

On June 5, 1954, in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jo married Richard M. Smith, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2002. They were married for 48 years, 2 months & 17.5 days.

She was a 1952 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and then continued on to the Sheldon’s College of Cosmetology, she opened Jo’s Beauty Bar and Beauty Shop. From the beauty businesses she then began an 18-year career with the Vermont Department of Corrections, retiring in 1991.

She was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary # 758 and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary – Green Mountain Unit # 1 and a longtime member of Highgate Center United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bake sales with her friend, Betty, and being in the company of her friend, Sylvie, as well as attending her church in Highgate.

Survivors include her sons, Scott Richard Smith of North Troy; Perry D.  Smith and his wife, Annette, of Swanton, as well as their three children; Nicole, Benjamin and Dustin. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce Smith of St. Albans and best friends, Betty Hutchins Pike of Swanton, and Sylvie Johnson of St. Albans, several nieces and nephews, her church family and her special little friend, “Doogan”.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jo is preceded in death by her sister, Martha Lyon and her husband, Paul; brother, J. Ballard Perry and his wife, Effie; brother-in-law, Hubert Smith; aunt, Mary Lou Fowler and nieces, Martha Susan Lyon, Cynthia Smith Cook, Patricia Ann Perry and her devoted companion, ‘Nellie’.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, July 29, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the Heald Chapel with the Reverend Kerry Cameron officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery.
