ST. ALBANS – Funeral services for Hubert Lawrence Smith, who passed away on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, were held on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Marguerite C. Gage officiating. The organist was Martha Maxfield. Hymns selected by the family were, “In the Garden”, “How Great thou Art”, “Onward Christian Soldiers” and the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
Special words of remembrance written by Hubert’s wife, Joyce, were read by Dr. Gage. Sharing his children’s memories was by Michael Bessette and his grandchildren’s memories were by grandson, Andrew Norris. Granddaughter, Casey Cook and Robert Coon also shared their memories.
In attendance and forming a Guard of Honor were members of the Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars Funeral Detail.
Also in attendance was representation from St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Bonnette Supply, High Street neighbors, Rock-Tenn of Sheldon and former co-workers of Central Vermont Railway.
Casket bearers were grandsons, Eric Smith, Travis Smith, Andrew Norris, Cody Norris, Kyle Norris, Ethan Moss and Adam Cook.
Following the service a reception was hosted by the Women’s Mission Society in the Fellowship Hall. Prayers of Committal were held at the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery by Dr. Gage and then military honors were accorded the World War II veteran by the Vermont National Guard Military Funeral Honor Guard with SGT John Curtis, Bugler and folding and presentation of the American Flag to Mrs. Smith was by PFC David Rhoden and SGT Jeremy Westover. Assisting the Smith family is the Heald Funeral Home.
