SOUTH BURLINGTON/ CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. — Grace Turlington Thorpe passed away at her home on Sunday, June 29, 2014 attended by family. Born in Coats, N.C., to the late William Roger and Ettie Ann (Jackson) Turlington, she was a graduate from the Campbell School of Nursing.
She was married to John Thorpe in June of 1939 and moved extensively with his position at AT&T. Grace retired to Calabash, N.C., and in 2005 moved to her present home in S. Burlington, Vt. When her husband was deployed overseas during WWII, Grace was a pediatrics RN. In retirement she volunteered at the N. Myrtle Beach ER when she wasn’t traveling internationally. She was an athletic woman and excelled in golf, bowling and tennis. Grace was also an accomplished bridge player and was sought after as a duplicate bridge partner.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, her brothers Leon, Lewis and Marvin and her sisters Edith Grice, Margie Jackson and Jessie Turlington.
Grace is survived by her sister Mavis (Turlington) Fucci, her son Bob and his wife, Mary, her daughter Susan DeMarco, grandchildren Jaime and John Thorpe, Kristina and her husband, Matt Hallenbeck, Michael and Lauren DeMarco, great grandchildren Abigale Hallenbeck, and Hayden Thorpe.
A memorial will be held at Allenwood Senior Community, in the community room, 90 Allen Rd, S. Burlington, at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 7. Interment will be on a future date in Chappaqua, N.Y.
