HIGHGATE SPRINGS — Frederick Maskell, age 84 years, a lifelong area resident died late Monday evening, May 4, 2015, at his Fortin Road residence with loving family at his side.

Born in Swanton on, May 18, 1930, he was the son of the late Judson and Beulah (Berger) Maskell. He attended Highgate schools and on, Sept. 25, 1954, was married to the former Barbara Curtis who predeceased him on Feb. 20, 2012.

From 1954 until his retirement in 1990 Fred worked as a trackman for the Central Vermont Railroad. He also faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Era and was a 50-year member of the American Legion, Post 42 in Enosburgh Falls.

A lifelong resident of Highgate Springs Fred was always proud to be known as a “springer”. Prior to his death he was the oldest living male resident of Highgate Springs. He was an avid ice fisherman and loved to hang around Martin’s Store in Highgate Springs. He and Barbara loved to travel, riding around looking for deer, camping and hunting.

Fred leaves his son, Michael Maskell and his wife, Marie, of Highgate; two daughters, Cheryl Fregeau and her husband, Richard, and Carol Berthiaume and Richard Conley all of Highgate Springs; his sister, Beulah “Sister” Lapan of Swanton; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Barbara, Fred was predeceased by seven brothers, Arthur, Roy, James, Carlton, William, Ronald and Terry Maskell.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend John H.D. Lucy will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Maskell family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, May 16, 2015, from 9 to 11 a.m.
