SWANTON / ARLINGTON, MASS. – Frances (Sheltus) Howrigan passed away June 23, 2013, in Boston and was laid to rest in Highgate Cemetery, Highgate, on June 28.

Born Dec. 8, 1919, in Swanton, she was the daughter of Martin H. and Anna P. Sheltus. She attended Swanton schools and graduated from Burlington Business College (now Champlain College) in 1939. She was employed in a secretarial position until her marriage to Will P. Howrigan Jr., in May 1943, after which she did bookkeeping for his construction business. Later, she served as Swanton’s assistant town clerk for several years. Her husband died in 1974, and she moved to Arlington, Mass., in 1977 to be closer to her sister and daughters. She was a skilled cook and seamstress, an avid gardener, a hockey fan (who rooted for the Canadiens when in Vermont but transferred her loyalties to the Bruins once in Massachusetts), and a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her sister, Janet S. Duggan, of Arlington and Brookline, Mass., her daughters Gail A. of Brookline, Mass., and Peggy J., M.D., of Newton, Mass., their husbands Robert S. Stern, M.D., and Charles Collins, and her grandchildren Elizabeth P. and Julia P. Stern and Charles Will Collins.
