THE VILLAGES, Fla./SHELBURNE — Ernest D. Oakes, age 75, passed away at this home in The Villages, Fla., on Feb 3, 2014, surrounded by his family.
Ernest was born May 13, 1938 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Thomas and Millie (Shane) Oakes.
Ernest came to Vermont as a young man and was employed at General Electric for 17 years. He subsequently retired from IBM and moved to The Villages, Fla., where he enjoyed golf, biking and playing horseshoes. He was a gifted athlete and excelled at the many sports he pursued.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. His down to earth practical advice and humor will be greatly missed. He was affectionately referred to as “Bups” by his grand and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet LaForce Oakes, and their four children, Susan Oakes of The Villages, Fla., son Victor and wife, Kimberly Oakes, of Sheldon, Sharon Swainbank and her husband, Philip Gerbode, of North Hero, and Laurie and her husband, Keith Duprey, of Swanton; six grandchildren, Peter Laroche, Abbey Monette, Kalie Severy, Kellsey Oakes and Ryan and Andrew Duprey and six great-grandchildren; a brother Thomas and his wife, June Oakes, of Pontiac, Ill., and his sister Nancy and her husband, Walter Campbell, of Wataga, Ill.; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ernest was predeceased by his two sisters, Rita Louise Oakes and Patricia and husband, James Sparks, of LaHabra, Calif.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 3 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington with Ernest’s nephew, Rev. Maitland LaForce officiating. Burial will follow in Shelburne Village Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Franklin/Grand Isle Parent Child Center in care of Shari Swainbank, 24 Briarcliff Drive, No Hero, VT, 05474.
