HIGHGATE – Elizabeth O. Hakey, age 75, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the VNA Respite House in Colchester.

She was born in Burlington on December 12, 1942 to the late Gordon & Naoma (Norman) Ouimette.

Betty married Richard, the love of her life on August 31, 1963, just shy of celebrating 55 years of marriage.

Betty truly enjoyed helping people. She loved her position as a Teacher’s Aide in Highgate and in Enosburg schools. Following her beloved career as an aide, she moved on to her true passion, working at Clark’s House of Flowers and eventually started her own business creating and selling dried flower arrangements. Betty would attend craft shows and enjoyed socializing with fellow crafters. Betty then followed her heart by staying home to care for Matthew, her beloved grandson, which was the most rewarding job of all.

Every Fall, Betty and Richard would head out on a road trip excursion for two. Their two to three-week adventures eventually led them to visit every state in the Continental United States. Betty enjoyed spending this time with the love of her life, and kept detailed notes of where they lodged and highlights from each state, and created a beautiful memory book.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Hakey of Highgate; their children, Scott Hakey and his wife, Mary of Norman, Okla., and Karen Hakey of Highgate; grandson, Matthew Minckler; siblings, Gordon Ouimette Jr., James Ouimette of Va., and Patricia Desorcie of Georgetown, Texas; sister-in-law, Cindy Hakey and her husband Donnie of Mooers, N.Y.; her special friend, Tammy Bockus and several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents.

In keeping with Elizabeth’s wishes, there will be no public services.

For those who wish, contributions in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to the VNA Respite House, 3113 Roosevelt Hwy, Colchester, VT 05446.
