ST. ALBANS — Elaine Lace Begnoche, 89, passed away peacefully at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Elaine was born in Swanton on May 2, 1925, the daughter of Elward and Lillian (Norris) Lace.

She attended school in Swanton and upon graduating high school in 1943, she began a long career as a secretary. She spent 25 years working for the Central Vermont Railroad in various departments. Elaine worked the telephone switchboard, as a bookkeeper and secretary in many different departments.   She left the Railroad in 1969 to work for the St. Albans School System where she was secretary for two superintendents and three principals.  In 1971, she began working at Bellows Free Academy as secretary to the Headmaster. She also worked in the Bookkeeping Department, secretary for the Guidance Department, the Attendance Department and the Northwest Technical Center, where a scholarship in her name is given to a deserving senior each year. She retired in 1993.

Elaine was a former member of the Business and Professional Women (BPW) and a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Although she was a full time working mother, Elaine always found time for her children, being a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and a leader for the Blue Birds and Campfire Girls. Elaine was a wonderful cook and will be remembered for her delicious pies and date filled cookies.

On July 29, 1950, Elaine married Leo Begnoche, who predeceased her in 2008.

Elaine will also be remembered for being the family historian and documenter and always lending an ear and words of support to those in need.

She is survived by her children, Stephen and his wife, Debbie and Susan and her husband, Andre Jette; her grandchildren, Nathan Reed,  Natalie Reed,  Lynde Dion and her husband, Adam, Ashley Yandow, Allison Yandow, Jessica Cota and her husband, Michael, Andrea Bushey and her husband, Joshua, as well as her great-grandchildren, MaKenzie, Aidan, Ayla, Kalli,  Reese, Brooklyn, Addison and Olivia.

Elaine is also survived by her sister, Doris Underwood; brother, George Lace and his wife, Elaine, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Elaine was preceded in death by parents, Elward and Lillian Lace, her infant son, Michael Charles and her brother, Wallace Lace.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 11th at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 11 Church Street, St. Albans. Interment will be later this spring in Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.
