ST. ALBANS — Daniel Lewis Mitchell was born Feb. 23, 1947, in Springfield, Mass., and departed on his final fishing adventure Feb. 14, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Myrtie (Patterson) Mitchell and brother, Jay.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie Lee Jacobs; loving son, Christopher and his wife, Liz, of Ashburn, Va.; step-daughters, Michele Tessier and husband, Todd, Linda Reed and husband, Michael, Karen Samson and partner, Robert Spaulding; grandchildren, Chase and Esabella Mitchell, Ashley and Jessica Reed and Kayla Samson; sister, Myrtie Dickey and husband, Richard, and nieces, nephews and many friends.
A heart transplant recipient in 1993 at Mass General Hospital in Boston, Dan was cared for by their heart transplant team through the years. Most recently he and his family received excellent care under Drs. Bayard and Roberts of St. Albans, their superb staff, and nurses with Franklin County Home Health Hospice Program.
An avid outdoorsman, Dan was instrumental in getting the walleye restoration off the ground. His vision and leadership as President of the Lake Champlain Walleye Association secured the first grant to build a portable walleye hatchery to hatch and stock walleye into Lake Champlain. He secured many more grants and expanded the program. Dan received letters of commendation for his work from the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and then Governor Jim Douglas. He was a member of the St. Albans Town Select Board and Zoning Commission and an ardent believer in the U.S. Constitution.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. At Dan’s request there will be no funeral service.
