ENOSBURG — Charles James Squires was born April 16 1928 in Enosburg, to Charles James and Mildred (Wells) Squires. Charlie grew up in a family of musicians and loved to play guitar and the fiddle. He was a boxer for the Vermont Golden Gloves and turned professional middleweight in 1948 until 1951.
He served in the U.S. Army and Merchant Marines during WWII. On May 8, 1971 he married Donna Ponusky in Hollis, N.H. He was sales supervisor for Cumberland Farms for 24 years and then was owner operator of C J’s Lake Street Market in St. Albans, until 1989. He also worked with the St. Albans Fire Department for five years. In 1995 they moved to Alexandria, S.D. and then to Emery in 2003. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. He was a volunteer DAV driver and the American Red Cross and the Veterans Health Center.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Squires, Emery; four sons: Timothy Squires, Scotland, S.D., Shawn Squires, Coco, Fla., John Brainard, East Newport, ME and James Brainard, Viera, Fla.; three daughters: Kathleen Evans, St. Albans, Carolyn Palano, Ware, Mass, and Colleen Ridgway, Tyndall, S.D.; fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Captain J.J. Brainard, a brother, Lawrence and a sister, Barbara Pelkey.
