SHELDON — Arthur A. “Cy” Donna a lifelong area resident and businessman passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the Northwestern Medical Center.
Born in Sheldon Springs on June 13, 1931, he was the son of the late Roy and Ellen (Demar) Donna. Cy was 82 years old.
On Aug. 27, 1955, in Highgate Center, he married Janet Bushey who survives him.
Cy was a 1949 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and then served his Country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He then had a 30-year career with the former Missisquoi Pulp Mill in Sheldon. He was an entrepreneur, having owned and operated the Sheldon Casino for 30 years, the Donna Trucking Company for 34 years and prepared many Income Tax Returns over a 50-year span.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs, a life member of Sheldon Springs Post # 88, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was active in the Sheldon community, serving as Town Constable, Overseer of the Poor for Franklin County, was a Franklin County Deputy Sheriff, and was instrumental in many fund raisers for the Sheldon Fire Department, Franklin-Grand Isle County Community Action, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 88.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janet, of Sheldon; their daughters, Theresa Donna and her friend, Carlo Corbeil, of Sheldon, Donna Tatro and her husband, Rick, of St. Albans, Linda Vest and her husband, Jim, of Sheldon, Sandra Wiener and her husband, Neil, of Georgia and Pamela Conger and her husband, Steven, of Sheldon and eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Cy is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Gendreau, Ann Sanderlin and Marguerite Messier and many nieces and nephews, including his nephew, Donald Reed who worked with Cy for many years. In addition to his parents, Cy was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Lee Donna on June 23, 1997; his brothers, Ronald, Paul, Albert and Gordon and his sister, Lillian Reed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 102 Shawville Road, Sheldon Springs. The Reverend Roger L. Charbonneau will be the celebrant. Interment with military honors will take place later this spring in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
