ST. ALBANS – More than 13 years ago, Kate Larose flew over the Atlantic Ocean to spend the next two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in a tiny village in Burkina Faso, a West African country.

She was 20 years old, straight out of college, didn’t speak French and had little to no health care experience.
