How can it be that no one is responsible for Ellis’ death?
Monday, November 09, 2009

Why is there no outrage over the recent decision made by our State’s Attorney regarding the numerous dismissal of charges, plea bargains in cases that result in little or no prison time, little or no bail set for major felony charges and the decision to file no charges in the recent death at the Northwest State Correctional Facility?

From the October 29th St. Albans Messenger :

“Under state law, criminal negligence requires that...

Wind turbines not the answer
Monday, November 09, 2009

The question and answer of the year is “are wind turbines the right answer”?  No!

    1. Did you know that taxpayers pay for 75% of the cost for building commercial wind turbines such as the proposed “Georgia Community Wind Project”?  They are ugly, huge, landscape-marring machines and provide intermittent, unreliable energy and have no base load capacity.

    2. A question to Mr. Landowner: You said to the people at...

Kenvin case deserves comment
Monday, November 09, 2009

Request for dismissal of case against Joseph Kenvin is a travesty. ‘I just didn’t see him.’ is not a defense for killing a motorcyclist. Inappropriate left-hand turns by other vehicles is one of the leading causes of death for motorcyclists. If Mr. Kenvin turned left into the path of another four-wheeled vehicle, he would be found negligent; or if he turned into the path of an 18-wheeler, he’d certainly be injured or dead, since he would have been on the losing end of...

Why would we cut schools?
Monday, October 26, 2009

I see that conservative economist Art Wolfe spoke to the Franklin-Grand-Isle Workforce Investment Board this past week.  As always, Michelle Monroe’s in-depth reporting on the event and conversation with Mr. Wolfe succeeds in bringing additional perspective to the discussion.

Apparently Mr. Wolfe thinks we spend too much money on education in Vermont.  He sees the fact that Vermont teachers are earning about the same salaries as teachers working anywhere...

We ain’t living it up, Sonny
Monday, October 26, 2009

This letter is in response to Jeffrey Norman in “discrimination land”. Apparently you have spent time living on Social Security to know how we seniors are what you call “living it up”.

If there are any seniors basking in the sun on a cruise ship while their kids are working they probably deserve the trip after working all “their” lives. But you probably never thought of that. That big $250. check to seniors that hasn’t been...

Suggestion that process was not open or transparent is absurd
Monday, October 19, 2009

I am writing in response to Mr. David McWilliams’ letter that appeared in the Monday edition of the St. Albans Messenger.

Mr. McWilliams states that “through a process that was not democratic or truly open, the city has chosen to reduce the size of the department dramatically…” This statement erodes Mr. McWilliams’ credibility, insults the citizens of St. Albans City and reveals the narrow, self-serving set of interests he represents. ...

Why USCIS employees are getting their backpay
Monday, October 19, 2009

I want to tell all of you VSC USCIS contract workers why it is that you will be getting backpay checks in the mail shortly. It is important to realize how you got under-paid the last 4 years and how it is being fixed, so that it never happens to you again. If you do not follow my advice, then my hard work and the hard work of many other good people was really for nothing. I do not want praise, or glory. You can thank me by taking the time to read this and understand it fully. I hope that the...

Argument against Lowe's doesn't make sense
Monday, August 31, 2009

Nothing amazes me any more but your editorial of 8/26/09 leaves me shaking my head. St. Albans seems to have more people move to town, or to Vermont, and want the doors locked to keep anyone else out. At one time St. Albans had many of the ingredients for growth and prosperity. The railroad was booming, Union Carbide moved in as did Fonda Container. IBM moved to Essex Junction and many local people were employed there. Now the railroad is just a shadow, Fonda is gone, and you...

My letter wasn’t rude
Monday, August 31, 2009

Mr. Morton: Thanks for the laughs.  I forget how naive some people can be regarding WalMart.  First I must address some issues regarding the letter posted in the Messenger titled “Want WalMart?  Move to Burlington”, dated 8/2/09.  This letter was my reply to someone who posted something on the sagrapevine.com.  I gave it no title as it was a reply to a posting called “Drop Walmart appeals, please”.  I did not sign my name as it is posted on...

Road is horrible up north, why pave south and not up here?
Monday, August 31, 2009

I just wondered if there was anyone else out there who regularly commutes to and from Burlington that travels on I-89 North or Southbound between Exits 19-21?  The section of road between these exits is like driving on a washboard and the cracks are becoming craters. They are paving all along the north and southbound lanes from Exit 18 to Exit 15 where it doesn’t really need it and leaving the roads up north, that are in desperate need of repair/paving, alone. It is ruining our cars...

Lowe’s? Give us Walmart instead
Monday, August 31, 2009

Seriously? Lowe’s? We have no good shopping center in Franklin County that has reasonable prices. Why can we have a Lowe’s and not a Walmart? I disagree with this. I think we should get rid of the idea of having a Lowe’s there and put in Walmart. I know people were concerned of having too much traffic if we got a Walmart. Do they think there won’t be a lot of traffic with a Lowe’s. There are a lot of people who cannot travel to Burlington or Plattsburg to do their...

We’re not opposed to Walmart, we’re opposed to the location
Monday, August 31, 2009

I have written before and have voiced my opposition to Walmart’s plan to build here in St. Albans. I am strongly against their current plan. As are many. And we have the right to oppose it just as much as anyone else has the right to support it.

But what I’m tired of is how those that support it never ever accurately voice what we’re (most of us) are opposed to. I am not opposed to Walmart coming to this community. Do I think that it is bad? Yes. Are...

Main Street is not Church Street
Thursday, August 06, 2009

To the VT reader in Neighborhood 7: Apparently you have no name or are afraid of criticism. Perhaps the stores you mentioned are fine for you but some of us prefer good items, not used.

We wanted a tea kettle but couldn’t find one we could afford in St. Albans, we had to send away for it. It was cheaper than going to Williston. What’s wrong with this picture?

We want a Walmart in town! Also Sue Prent seems to think Main...

Whew! That was close!
Thursday, August 06, 2009

To the two northbound commuters on I-89 just north of the railroad bridge in Georgia on Tues 8/4/09 about 5 pm, thank you, thank you, thank you for averting what could have been a serious multi-car accident.

I have worked in St Albans, about a mile from home, for over 15 years, so I haven’t needed to do a lot of Interstate driving in that time. My bosses decided that my skills were needed at our Essex facility and Monday 8/3 was my first day in that new location....

Personal plea for health care reform
Wednesday, August 05, 2009

On behalf of my Mother, Lillian A. Stenta, the need for health reform is “NOW” before millions of others suffer and die as my mother did due to no health insurance.

Lillian was in constant pain and needed to take painkillers to get through the day. Her reasons not to go to the doctor’s is she had no insurance and didn’t have the money for the visit not to mention how expensive the medications were every time she had a prescription.

Let’s talk about health welfare
Wednesday, August 05, 2009

Recent letters to the editor demonstrate that proponents of universal health welfare continue their mantra that it is better than our current status (I detest describing everything as a system) because some countries with it have higher human longevity and lower infant mortality rates than us. That is a flawed cause and effect conclusion. Why is our infant mortality rate higher? Most intelligent people agree that we have excellent medical facilities and medical personnel, possibly the world’s...

Critics wrong about old refrigerators
Wednesday, August 05, 2009

In response to recent letters to the editor regarding the launch of Efficiency Vermont’s Second Refrigerator retirement program, we would like to provide some additional details about this service.

Old, inefficient and underutilized second refrigerators cost Vermonters money and are hard to get rid of.  They were typically primary refrigerators that were put to the basement or garage when a new one was purchased. Many of them are plugged in and running...

Stung by a bee, saved by NMC
Sunday, August 02, 2009

I have been allergic to be stings my whole life. I have not been stung for about 18 years until a month ago when I jumped into bed and was stung by a large yellow jacket. I have an “epi pen” used to counteract the effects by injection. I never got a reaction that night and the sting did not affect me. I figured that I had outgrown being allergic to bee stings. Wrong. Again, yesterday the 29th, I was stung again moving my lawn. I seemed to be fine again until about 15 minutes...

Sotomayor hearings show our hypocrisy - put party labels aside
Sunday, August 02, 2009

Politics is a nasty game but sometimes it’s nastier than others. During the entire Sotomayor confirmation hearing the Democratic Party and their operatives have brought the nastiness to a new level.

While most Republicans oppose this nominee based upon her positions/beliefs, the democrats have continuously warned that they will make the issue one of race/ethnicity. The Democrats have fired up Latino groups who are also now publicly on the attack claiming that...
